  2. Athlone is a town that lies on the River Shannon near the southern extremity of Lough Ree, Ireland. It is located close to the geographical centre of Ireland, on the border of two counties, Roscommon and Westmeath. Athlone is a great location to explore the Midlands of Ireland from. There is a wealth of attractions, historical sites, family and visitor amenities that are located in the town and neighbouring areas.

    There is a unique mix of heritage, culture and an urban buzz. Re-enact the Siege of Athlone at Athlone Castle Visitor Centre, follow the Viking trail to Clonamacnoise on one of our boat-trips or simply stroll along the banks of the River Shannon on a warm summer's day or sip a cocktail on the deck overlooking the Shannon after hitting the shops!

    Travel Links - Athlone is a natural hub for transport, with frequent bus and rail schedules. Athlone railway station services the main Galway to Dublin and Dublin to Westport/Ballina lines. Bus Eireann, the national bus operator, operates from beside the train station and covers most towns and cities in the country, including an hourly service to Dublin and Galway. Other private operators also provide services to some towns and cities. Bus Éireann also operates a local Athlone bus service. The town is also home to a number of privately operated services, including the Flagline bus company. Taxi service is widely available throughout the area.

    You can reach Athlone by landing in Dublin or Shannon. Athlone is just 90 minutes from either Dublin or Shannon Airport. Citylink bus company connects Dublin Airport with Athlone via it's Galway route. The bus stops at Arcadia about 15 minute walk north from the Civic Centre. The stop is a bus shelter.
