Andernach, Germany

Adernach is a town in the district of Mayen-Koblenz, in Rhineland-Palatinate. It is situated towards the end of the Neuwied basin on the left bank of the Rhine between the former tiny fishing village of Fornich in the north and the mouth of the small river Nette in the southeast, just 13 miles (21 km) north of Koblenz.

Adernach is one of the oldest towns in Germany. It features medieval fortifications such as the 183 feet (56 m) tall "Round Tower" (Ger. "Der Runde Turm") finished in 1453, the archiepiscopal (Cologne-electoral) castle ruins with a well-preserved keep, and the remains of the town wall with several well-restored wall towers and two gates. Other attractions include the “Old Crane” of Adernach and the world's highest (max. 210 feet (64 m)) cold-water geyser, driven by carbon dioxide.

Travel Links - The most common starting points for a tour of the Rhine Valley are Cologne, just north of Bonn, and Frankfurt, just east of Rüdesheim. Frankfurt is actually on the Main, not the Rhine itself, so the Rhine towns of Mainz and Wiesbaden also make popular starting points.
