  2. Schiedam is a city and municipality in the province of South-Holland in the Netherlands and is part of the Rotterdam metropolitan area. The city is located west of Rotterdam, east of Vlaardingen and south of Delft. In the south it is connected with the village of Pernis by the Beneluxtunnel.

    The city is best known for its historical centre and the tallest old windmills in the world. It is also known for the production of jenever (gin) - such as the internationally-renowned Ketel One - so much so that in French and English the word schiedam (usually without a capital s-) refers to the town's Holland gin. This was the town's main industry during the early Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th century

    Travel Links – The nearest airport is Rotterdam The Hague Airport with (cheap) flights from selected cities in Europe.

    The main train station is Schiedam Centrum which is well served by national rail (Nederlandse Spoorwegen with direct connections to Maassluis, Hoek van Holland, Delft, Den Haag, Leiden, Haarlem, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Dordrecht, Breda, Roosendaal, Middelburg and Vlissingen. For international trains ariving at Rotterdam Centraal Station, Schiedam Centrum is a 5 minute train ride from there. Schiedam Nieuwland train station is located north-west of the city centre and is served by the Hoek van Holland-Rotterdam Centraal railway line.

    Eurolines links Rotterdam with various cities of Europe. The Eurolines buses arrive in front of Rotterdam Centraal Station, from there it's a 5 minute train ride to Schiedam Centrum, or take tram line 21 or 23.
