Stavoren, Netherlands

Stavoren is a small town on the coast of the IJsselmeer, about 5 km south of Hindeloopen. It is the oldest city in Friesland and one of the stops on the Elfstedentocht, (literally, 'eleven city ride'), an ice skating contest/event which occurs when the winter temperatures provide safe conditions.

The medieval legend about the Lady of Stavoren is symbolic for the mysterious decline of the city of Stavoren after a rich and wealthy past. Nowadays, water sports generate the main income. Especially during the summer, since Stavoren is one of the main routes from the Ijsselmeer to the lakes of Friesland.
