  2. Fort Madison is located along the Mississippi River in the southeast corner of Iowa. Fort Madison is situated between small bluffs and one of the widest portions of the river. The city of Fort Madison was established around the site of the historic Fort Madison (1808–1813), which was the first permanent U.S. military fortification on the Upper Mississippi.

    Visitors to Fort Madison can plan a tour to Old Fort Madison, or visit the North Lee County Historical Center Museum or the Fort Madison Art Center. There are specialty stores, fine restaurants and Victorian style homes to enjoy on a stroll through the historic district.
