Cruise Description

14 Night Cruise sailing from Yokohama to Shanghai aboard Westerdam.

The ms Westerdam is the third in Holland America Line's series of Vista-class ships. As such, she embraces the latest industry and environmental technologies such as her use of a diesel-electric power plant for optimal energy efficiency and an Azipod propulsion system. Most of her staterooms have ocean views and many have private verandahs.

The theme of ms Westerdam's art collection is Dutch heritage in the New World. Art ranges from paintings of historic Dutch ships, such as Henry Hudson's Half Moon, to a huge Indian silver-overlaid wood palace doorway, a bone tobacco pipe carved in the shape of a woman's head to a collection of 5,000-year-old pre-Columbian carved limestone figures from Ecuador. Contemporary pieces include an original Andy Warhol portrait and signature sculptures by Sedona artist Susanna Holt.

Highlights of this cruise:

Yokohama is the capital city of Kanagawa Prefecture and the second largest city in Japan by population after Tokyo. It lies on Tokyo Bay, south of Tokyo, in the Kantō region of the main island of Honshū. It is a major commercial hub of the Greater Tokyo Area.

Yokahama offers a wide variety of attractions. The historic port area is Kannai. Next to the waterfront Yamashita Park is Yokohama Marine Tower, the tallest inland lighthouse in the world. Further inland lies Yokohama Chinatown, the largest Chinatown in Japan and one of the largest in the world. Nearby is Yokohama Stadium, the Silk Center, and the Yokohama Doll Museum. The Isezakichō and Noge areas offer many colourful shops and bars.

The futuristic Minato Mirai 21 harbourside redevelopment offers many points of interest. The highlights are the Landmark Tower which is the tallest building in Japan, Queen's Square Yokohama (a shopping mall) and the Cosmo Clock 21, which was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world when it was built in 1989 and which also doubles as "the world's biggest clock".

Osaka is a city in the Kansai region of Japan’s main island of Honshu. It is located at the mouth of the Yodo River on Osaka Bay. It is well-known for its abundance of excellent restaurants and the performing arts of Kabuki and Bunraku. The city also boasts an impressive aquarium and superb Museum of Oriental Ceramics. The city’s busy Namba and Umeda districts are renowned for their nightlife and the Dotonburi area is particularly lively after dark. Universal Studios Japan, a 140-acre theme park in Osaka, is enormously popular.

The Port of Osaka's most famous attraction is Osaka Castle. It is the symbol of the city, containing 13 structures that are official national Important Cultural Assets including the grand gates and turrets on the outer moat. The Castle is a magnificient sight, with grand high walls, a wide moat, and ornamental tile roofs and carved reliefs, all gilded in gold.

Dalian is a major city and seaport in the south of Liaoning province, Northeast China. It has the largest port in northern China as well as being a major destination for Chinese tourists. In addition to the stunning cliffs and scenic parks, numerous places along the coastline are good for beach resort visitors and water sports lovers.

Today it is a place with museums and historical sites for tourists to learn the history of the city. Bingyu Valley, 240 kilometers (150 miles) north of Dalian is home to an astonishing array of rock formations amidst limpid waters, similar to those found in Guilin.

Beijing is recognized as the political, educational, and cultural center of the People's Republic of China, and is one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China.
