  3. Munich is the capital and the largest city of the German state of Bavaria. It is located on the River Isar north of the Bavarian Alps. Munich is the third largest city in Germany, behind Berlin and Hamburg. It is well known for its beautiful architecture, fine culture and the annual Oktoberfest beer celebration. Munich is also a major international center of business, engineering, research and medicine.

Four grand royal avenues of the 19th century with magnificent official buildings connect Munich's inner city with the suburbs.
