It lies at the head of the Sunnylvsfjord, which is a branch of the Storfjord (Great Fjord), and which the more famous Geirangerfjord in turn, branches off nearby.
The village on the mountain sides at the end of the Sunnylvsfkprd is exceptionally picturesque. The Hellesylt waterfall gushes right through the centre of the town into the Fiord. This waterfall is one of the most photographed sites in Norway.
