Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo are twin towns, each located on its own bay facing onto the Pacific Ocean. Acapulco is to the south. The cruise port is in Zihuatanejo.
In Indian dialect, Zihuatanejo means "River of the Yellow Water." This small bay and resort was discovered by tourists in 1940. At the time, the only access to the village was by the sea.
Zihuatanejo combines history with its cobbled streets and old buildings with shopping and restaurants. It is also a great fishing and diving centre and has very safe beaches.
Ixtapa on the other hand is a purpose built tourist town. Resorts and Luxury Hotels combine with parks and shopping malls as well as the beautiful beaches along the Pacific coast.
A photo stop at Playa Quieta (Calm Beach), where you will be able to view the magnificent island of Ixtapa, is a must.
