  3. Carcass Island is the largest of the West Point Island Group of the Falkland Islands. It lies north west of West Falkland and south east of the Jason Islands. It has been run as a sheep farm for over a century and is presently privately owned.

    Port Patterson on the southwest coast is known for its gardens, which have a tropical feel, and has a small shop/grocery. It has been settled continuously for over a hundred years. The main house, occupied by the McGills, dates to 1938, and is a single-storey building, which has been extended over the years. There is also a wool shed, cow shed and several red-roofed houses made from weatherboard.

    The island has no rats or cats, and as a result has a wide variety of birdlife including Black-crowned Night Herons, known in the Falkland Islands as "quarks", as well as seals and penguins. Tussock grass also grows here.

    Port Location – The port is located at Port Patterson, on the south west coast of the island. Leopard Point is also often used as a landing port.

    Transport Links – Most international flights to the Falklands arrive at the Mount Pleasant (MPN) airport, which is also a military base. The Mount Pleasant airport is 56km (35 miles) from Stanley. The only international carriers to use this airport are LanChile on a weekly flight from Santiago de Chile via Punta Arenas (CL), Rio Gallegos (AR) (monthly) and the UK Royal Air Force who carry commercial passengers direct from RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire in the United Kingdom. Flights from the UK last eighteen hours including a stop on Ascension Island en route. The RAF contracts two flights per week which are subject to military priorities. There is also an airport in Stanley (PSY) but it has a smaller runway and is used primarily for flights within the Falklands.
