Melilla, Spanish Mor

Melilla is a Spanish exclave in North Africa, on the Moroccan side of the Mediterranean. Surrounded on all sides by Morocco, Mellila is an intriguing blend of Moorish and Iberian cultures. Remnants of Spain are everywhere in the city, but nowhere are they more prominently displayed than in the Plaza de Espaa This park-like public space forms a perfect circle in the center of town.

Attractions in Melilla include its Modernist architecture with fresco-style murals above Islamic tiled archways–the spirit of Spain with a touch of North African. The old city, the fortress and the charming market area are also worth a visit.

Port Location – The Port is located to the north of the city, where the original harbor is now reserved for pleasure craft.

Travel Links – Air Nostrum (Iberia Regional) flies from Málaga (8 flights daily), Madrid (3 flights), and one flight from Almería, Granada, and Barcelona. There is also a helicopter service from Málaga.

There are ferry services run by Acción Trasmediterránea, from Malaga: 8 hours, with a fast ferry (5 hours) in the summer and from Almeria: 6.5 hours .
