Popof is an island in the Shumagin Islands south of mainland Alaska. The largest community in the area, Sand Point, is located on the northwest coast. Sand Point is a beautiful location which is popular with hikers due to its lack of bears. Birdwatching is also a favourite pastime, with the island being home to a spectacular population of bird life including eagles, puffins, cormorants and kittiwakes.
Local boat owners are often available to tour visitors around nearby waters to view a vast array of marine life. A popular day trip destination is nearby Unga Island, where you can find a rare petrified forest, one of the largest abandoned villages in the Aleutians, or the relics of gold mines.
